Family Health Plus Members:Find Hospitals for Breast Cancer Surgeries

The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) has taken steps to make sure Family Health Plus members go to hospitals and centers that do many more mastectomies (an operation to remove the breast) and lumpectomies (an operation to remove lump(s) of cancer from the breast) and have better success rates as a result.

As of March 1, 2009, NYSDOH stopped paying for breast cancer operations at hospitals and surgery centers that do less than 30 breast cancer operations a year. NYSDOH does not allow health insurance companies to approve or pay for these operations for their Family Health Plus members at these hospitals and surgery centers after July 1, 2009. As a result, GHI is not approving or paying for these operations for Family Health Plus members at these places. These hospitals and surgery centers are still able to do biopsies and give care after an operation, including chemo, radiation and plastic surgery.
